Happy Father’s Day!
Jenny: Hey, Allen, Father’s Day is just around the corner!
Allen: I know. What should we do to make this day memorable for Dad?
Jenny: Let’s put our heads together and come up with a fantastic surprise to show our appreciation and love to Dad. But do you know the origin of Father’s Day?
Allen: No, I don’t. Why don’t you tell me about this.
Jenny: Well, it goes back to the early 20th century. It’s said that the idea of honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood started in the United States. Sonora Smart Dodd is often credited with the concept of Father’s Day. She wanted to create a day to appreciate and acknowledge the sacrifices her father made in raising her and her siblings after their mother passed away.
Allen: That’s really touching. So, when did the first Father’s Day take place?
Jenny: The first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, in Washington. It gained popularity over the years, and then in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring Father’s Day a national holiday, which fell on the third Sunday of June.
Allen: It’s amazing how such a heartfelt idea turned into a global celebration
Jenny: Exactly! As the tradition spread to different countries, they chose dates that held significance to themselves. In Taiwan for instance, Father’s Day is celebrated on August 8, as the date sounds like the word for “father” in Mandarin.
Allen: It’s wonderful how customs and celebrations can have such diverse origins but still serve the same purpose of expressing love and gratitude for our fathers.
Jenny: Absolutely! Let’s get started with the preparations and make this Father’s Day one for the books!
