各位在準備多益考試的朋友，會不會覺得某些字長得好像，總是搞不清楚它們的差別呢？
小編今天要帶大家深入了解一個常常造成混淆的字，就是 except（除了……之外）。
首先，對於某些初學者來說，這個字和 expect（預期）長得很像，一不留神就搞錯了。我們來看一個例句：
The Board might expect/except a significant increase in trading volume.
董事會可能會預計交易量將大幅增加
根據語意，我們該選用動詞 expect。
再來看第二個句子：
Everyone agreed to the proposal expect/except the manager.
除了經理之外，大家都贊成該提案。
根據語意，我們該選用 except（= with the exception of）。這樣大家知道 except 和 expect 的差異了吧？
另一個初學者常感到困惑的地方，就是 except 和 besides 的差異。雖然中文翻譯都是 “除了……之外”，但 except 表達是例外（exception），所以以上的例句表示經理不贊成該提案。相比之下，besides（= in addition to） 表達的並非是例外，而是“附加” 的語意。比較以下例句：
Besides the manager, Peter agreed to the proposal.
除了經理之外，彼得也同意該提案。（經理和彼得都同意該提案）
但在否定句裡，besides 和 except 同義：
John talked to no one except/besides the manager.
約翰除了跟經理說話之外，沒跟別人說話。
接下來細看 except的特殊用法。在句首時，只能用 Except for，而非 Except：
Except for the manager, everyone agreed to the proposal.
除了經理之外，大家都贊成該提案。
如果只用 except 表達上句的語意，就得將 except 引導的片語移至句末：
Everyone agreed to the proposal except (for) the manager.
此處的介係詞 for 可以省略。然而，只有在蓋括性的詞語（例如 every、no、all、any、whole 等等）後面的 except for 才可將 for 省略。在下面的句子裡只能用 except for：
The report was excellent except for the wording.
該報告除了措辭之外，其他部分都很出色。（只有措辭不出色）
現在來看看一個常見詞組：do nothing except+ 原形動詞（= do nothing but+ 原形動詞）：
John does nothing except type reports every day.
約翰每天除了打報告，其他事都不做。
當 do 是現在式、過去式、原形或過去分詞時，but 後的動詞都是原形。但 do 以 Ving的形式出現時，but 後的動詞通常用 Ving 的形式：
John spent the entire day doing nothing except typing a report.
約翰花了整天的時間打一份報告，其他事都沒做。
