在準備多益考試的時候，大家會不會覺得一字多義（polysemy）的現象很令人頭大呢？今天要和大家分享 claim 這個多義字，希望對大家的多益成績和日常生活中都有幫助喔！
❖ claim
✓ claim 「聲稱」的意思，代表所說的話不一定有事實依據，並不一定屬實，例如：
e.g. The scientist claimed to have cloned the first human embryos, but researchers soon discovered he had forged his findings. （雖然這科學家聲稱已成功複製出人類胚胎，但是研究者很快發現他捏造了研究成果。）
✓ 另外有出國經驗的人，應該都有在機場領取行李的經驗，我們可以用 「claim one’s baggage」表達這個概念，claim在此有「認領」 的意思，也就是旅客們要拿走屬於自己的行李，類似的用法還有到失物招領處（Lost and Found）去認領遺失的物品。
e.g. The police said that if no one claims the watch, you can keep it.（警察說如果沒有人來認領這隻手錶，你就可以留著它。）
✓ 由此可延伸出 claim還有「主張對某事物的權利」之意，最常見的例子是「申請保險理賠」。
e.g. Can you claim on your insurance for damage to the car? （你的車子損壞可以向保險公司申請理賠嗎？）
✓ 在時事英文中，claim也常用來表示天災或意外「奪走人命」。
e.g. A factory fire broke out in the Daya District of Taichung on October 3, claiming the lives of two firefighters. （十月三日位於台中大雅區的一處工廠發生大火，造成兩名消防弟兄不幸罹難。 ）
✓ 而新聞媒體報導運動賽事時，則常用claim表示某選手或隊伍「奪下了某頭銜」或「創下某成績或紀錄」。
e.g. Japan’s Olympic team returned home to a hero’s welcome after claiming 13 medals, including four golds, at the Pyeongchang Winter Games, marking a record high for the country in the history of the Winter Olympics.（日本平昌冬奧國家代表隊凱旋歸國，這次日本拿下冬奧史上最佳紀錄13面金牌，包括4面金牌。）
