【layoff用法】『裁員』和『解雇』的英文分別要怎麼說？
景氣不好、年關難過，因此最近一些公司也開始進行縮編和裁員，今天我們就來學習關於『裁員』和『解雇』的相關英語表達：
- 公司進行縮編（downsizing），會給予裁員的員工資遣費（severance pay）， 這種就是 layoff（裁員），來自於動詞片語 lay sb off（裁員某人）。
- lay sb off 將某人裁員
Due to financial constraints, the company had to lay off several employees.
由於財政拮据，公司不得不解雇幾名員工。
*constraint /kənˈstreɪnt/ n. 限制；限定；約束
- downsize 縮編
The company decided to downsize its workforce in response to the economic downturn.
由於經濟不景氣，公司決定縮減員工規模。
- severance pay / termination pay 資遣費
After being laid off, the employees were provided with severance pay to assist them during the transition period.
在被裁員後，公司提供瞭解雇費以協助員工度過過渡期。
- 而開除員工一般是因為員工做了危害公司的行為，是不會給予任何資遣費用 的。英語裡可以用來表示『解雇』的慣用語很多，列舉如下：
- give sb a pink slip 解雇某人
*"a pink slip" 通常是指雇員收到的解雇通知書，這種通知書可能是印在粉 紅色紙上，因此得名。收到一張粉紅色的解雇通知書通常意味著雇員即將面 臨雇傭終止。
Unfortunately, he received a pink slip due to company downsizing.
不幸的是，由於公司要縮編，他收到瞭解雇通知。
- get sacked 被解雇
*sack 名詞表『麻布袋』，動詞表『解雇』
He got sacked for consistently arriving late to work.
他因為上班總是遲到而被解雇。
- get canned 被解雇
*can 名詞表『罐頭』，動詞表『解雇』
She got canned for violating company policies.
她因違反公司政策而被解雇。
- show someone the door解雇某人
After the incident, the manager had to show him the door.
事件發生後，經理不得不把他開除。
- give someone the boot解雇某人
*boot 是名詞，表『靴子』
The employee was given the boot for stealing office supplies.
這名雇員因偷竊辦公用品而被解雇。
- let sb go 解雇某人
The company had to let several employees go due to financial difficulties.
由於財務困難，公司不得不解雇了幾名員工。
- give sb the ax / to ax sb 解雇某人
Due to the company’s financial difficulties, they had to give several employees the ax last month.
由於公司財務困難，他們上個月不得不裁掉了幾名員工。
The manager had no choice but to ax some under-performing team members to improve overall productivity.
為了提高整體生產力，經理別無選擇，只能解雇一些表現不佳的團隊成員。
*have no choice / option / alternative but to V 別無選擇只好做.....
