Ryan, who is visiting from Germany, asks his Taiwanese friend Dinah a question.

Ryan: Hey Dinah, I saw something on the news. Many people are walking with a statue?

Dinah: Yes! That’s the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage. It happens every year in Taiwan.

Ryan: Mazu? Who is that?

Dinah: Mazu is a sea goddess. Many people in Taiwan believe she protects them, especially fishermen and travelers.

Ryan: Oh, I see. So why do they walk with her?

Dinah: They follow her statue from a temple in Baishatun to another temple in Beigang. It’s a kind of religious trip.
黛娜：他們從白沙屯的廟宇一路跟著媽祖的神像走到北港的另一間廟，這是一種宗教旅行。

Ryan: How far is it?
萊恩：路程多遠？
Dinah: About 400 kilometers. It takes 8 to 10 days, and they even walk at night.
黛娜：大約四百公里，要走八到十天，還會走夜路呢。
Ryan: That sounds really hard. Why do so many people do it?
萊恩：聽起來很辛苦，為什麼這麼多人參加？
Dinah: Some people pray for health or good luck. Others just want to thank Mazu or feel close to her.
黛娜：有些人祈求健康或好運，也有人只是想感謝媽祖或想更靠近她。

Ryan: But don’t they have to work?
萊恩：但他們不用上班嗎？
Dinah: Many people take time off. Some use their annual leave just for this. Even some bosses join and bring their employees.
黛娜：很多人會請假。有些人特地用年假參加，甚至有老闆自己也走，還帶員工一起去呢。
