Photographer Jackie Black has created a visual project of photographs that show the last meals requested by prisoners on American death row before they were executed.

“How does it feel to ask for one last meal before being executed for a crime that you may or may not have committed?” asks Black, who wants the public to have a deeper understanding of the death penalty system.

Quite a few prisoners chose to have fast food for their last meals, while some only requested hard candy, cereals and milk, ice-cream, or just an apple.

Black says,“If we put ourselves in front of that food, perhaps we can feel what that experience is like.”
