“Popular religion” describes the everyday religious practices shared by members of a specific society and can include beliefs from “real” religions as well as traditions from local cultures.

This mix of beliefs can be clearly seen in Taiwan’s many temples, the largest number of which were built for people to worship gods from both Buddhism and Taoism.
