Isao Takahata, the legendary director who co-founded Japan’s premier animation studio, Studio Ghibli and was known for his animated films such as “Grave of the Fireflies” and “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya”, died of lung cancer last Thursday in Tokyo. He was 82.

Takahata’s death was confirmed in a statement by Studio Ghibli, which he and director Hayao Miyazaki founded in 1985 with producer Toshio Suzuki.
