This week was another win for LGBT+ activists. On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it will no longer call transgender people mentally ill.

Previously, the WHO said that people who identify with a gender other than the one they are given at birth had something called “gender incongruence”, which it said was a mental disorder.

Part of this reason was because some transgender people need medical treatment to help them change into the person they really are.

However, this was causing discrimination against transgender people. Removing the mental health label from trans identity is an important part of accepting them into society, activists and mental health professionals say.

“It’s sending a very strong message that the rest of the world doesn’t think it is a mental disorder anymore,” says Dr. Michael First, a professor at Columbia University. “One of the benefits of moving it out of the mental disorder section is trying to reduce stigma.”

The document will now have to be approved by member countries of the World Health Assembly (WHA) next May before becoming official in 2022.

The WHO says that they think the new definition will be easily accepted, even though transgender people still face discrimination in most parts of the world.
