Workers in Arms: Five Minutes with 95 Youth Labor Union
There is a group of people who are not afraid to stand their ground. They are a group that link arms, form picket lines and fight for what they believe in, because what is not fought for now will only have to be suffered tomorrow.

They are the 95 Youth Labor Union, an organization consisting largely of young workers, college students, and scholars.

They are committed to protecting workers’ rights, even when it comes at their own risk.

Chen Xiao-wen joined 95 Youth ten years ago. As a senior member of the union, she constantly butts heads with officials and business owners.
butt heads with~=come into conflict with~與…
Through the work, Chen gained knowledge of the internal power structure of public and private institutions, and this has allowed her union to possess more bargaining chips and resources to supervise the government while carrying out effective negotiations with company heads.

One of her primary concerns is for “atypical workers” — people who are employed in part-time, temporary, fixed-term, or seasonal positions.
atypical(adj.)
According to a study released by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, as of May last year, there were 805,000 atypical workers in Taiwan, accounting for 7.11% of the working population.
account for 佔~比例
A labor group interpreted this as a symptom of Taiwan’s worsening job market, because of the instability and workers’ rights abuses that can occur in such positions.

Chen explains that hairdressing apprentices may work more than ten hours a day and that their amount of overtime could be worth over NT$500,000 over a three-year working period, but in many cases, they are not paid for it.
apprentice(n.)學徒
Businesses in the food and drink industry are also notorious for taking advantage of their employees.
be notorious for…因…而惡名昭著=be infamous for…take advantage of~(負面)利用exploit(v.)剝削
Chen says that people in these situations should “stand their ground” and unionize their coworkers to fight for their rights and push for change.
unionize(v.)使…組織工會organize(v.)組織push for sth.
However, poor working conditions force workers to just quit and find other jobs, only to repeat the same cycle.
only to RV結果卻…;結果卻…
Nonetheless, as Chen says, “Times are changing, and as the years roll on, we won’t give up, nor will we let our principles slide. We’ll make sure that all of Taiwan moves forward together.”
