On July 23, the World Health Organization declared that the monkeypox outbreak is now a global health emergency.

The announcement was made by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus following a meeting of the WHO’s Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations, their second meeting about the disease.

“Since then, the outbreak has continued to grow, and there are now more than 16,000 reported cases from 75 countries and territories, and five deaths,” according to Dr. Tedros.
