A global health crisis was declared by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Aug. 14 due to outbreaks of mpox — or monkeypox — in Africa.

This announcement came several days after the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requested “international help to stop the spread of the virus.”
