Taiwan’s Executive Yuan has established May 19 as White Terror Memorial Day to remember the victims of political violence during the country’s White Terror era, which lasted from 1949 to 1992.

This announcement was made by the country’s Cabinet, under the direction of President Tsai Ing-wen, after members of the public called for the remembrance of this dark time in Taiwan’s history.

In announcing the White Terror Memorial Day, Premier Chen Chien-jen noted that establishing a day of national remembrance is a “crucial step” in the country coming to grips with its past and working toward justice for the victims.
