What we post online must still comply with a country’s laws, and writing anonymously is no exception.

FUNDAY legal consultant Chang Yun-che explains that although the constitution protects the right to free speech, “free speech” has its limits.

For example, you can be held accountable for speech that infringes on other people’s rights, such as their rights to reputation or privacy.

“As far as online witch hunts are concerned, a netizen can’t be held liable for collecting or scrolling through a person’s public information,” Chang explains.

However, taking this research any further runs the risk of crossing a legal line. Posting baseless, defamatory comments about a targeted individual (including inferences or accusations), sharing private information, personal attacks and harassment are all against the law.

Chang adds that victims of online bullying should not be afraid to take their case to court, as online bullies cannot be prosecuted without a complaint by the victim.
bully(n.)霸凌者(v.)霸凌;欺凌prosecute(v.)
By pressing charges and holding perpetrators responsible, victims can demand a public apology, have the damaging information taken offline, and even request compensation to restore their reputation.
