Card payment companies Visa and Mastercard have announced they will suspend operations in Russia.

Visa also announced that cards issued in Russia would no longer function outside the country.

“We are compelled to act following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and the unacceptable events that we have witnessed,” Visa Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alfred Kelly said.

Russia’s major banks, however, downplayed the effects the card suspensions would have on their clients.
