Two Republican U.S. senators — Rep. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee — have condemned South Africa for pressuring Taiwan to relocate its representative office.

Since 2023, the government of South Africa has been calling for Taiwan’s Taipei Liaison Office to move from the capital Pretoria to Johannesburg and change to a “trade office.”

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the South African government sent a letter to the office in Pretoria in late January, demanding that it be relocated by the end of March.
