On Sunday morning, three US senators made a brief visit to Taiwan, bringing the news that America will donate 750,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines to Taiwan.

Among them, Senator Tammy Duckworth, who was born in Thailand to a Thai mother of Chinese descent, was in the local media spotlight.

Duckworth, who arrived in Taiwan with her two colleagues, Chris Coons and Dan Sullivan, landed at Taipei’s Songshan Airport in a US military plane.

“We are here today to underscore the bipartisan support for Taiwan and the strength of our partnership,” Duckworth said.

In her speech, Duckworth also mentioned that she wanted to visit Taiwan because her mother is of Chinese descent.

Her mother’s family originally lived in Chaozhou, Guangdong and fled to Thailand to escape the oppression of the Communist Party. Therefore, she said, “It’s especially important to me to be here to support another democracy in the region.”
