The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations passed legislation on Tuesday to help Taiwan maintain diplomatic relations with its remaining allies and to facilitate its participation on the international scene.

The legislation, entitled Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative Act of 2019, or TAIPEI Act 2019 for short, was introduced by US Senator Cory Gardner in May.

Most importantly, the bill urges the US government to negotiate with Taiwan for a free trade agreement, which would safeguard Taiwan against China’s threat to terminate a semi-free trade pact with the island. Currently, 40 percent of Taiwan’s goods are exported to China.
