The US Senate passed legislation that could ultimately block some Chinese companies from listing shares on US stock exchanges, or raising money from American investors, unless they abide by US regulatory and audit standards.

The bill, introduced by Senator John Kennedy, would require companies to certify that “they are not owned or controlled by a foreign government” and submit their audit reports that can be reviewed by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. It was approved by unanimous consent.

The bill could be applied to all foreign companies that seek access to US capital, but it takes aim at China in the wake of intense criticism of Beijing by US President Donald Trump that has been echoed by lawmakers in both parties.

The Trump administration has also expressed support for stricter oversight of Chinese companies. White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow told Fox Business Network that “we have to” push for more accountability from Chinese companies listed in US markets.

The bill would also need to be approved by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives before reaching the president’s desk to be signed into law.
