簽署醫衛合作備忘錄
US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar visited Taiwan on August 9, leading a delegation at US President Trump’s will to discuss further collaboration with Taiwan in medicine and public health in the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Azar is the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan after the two countries severed diplomatic ties in 1979.
美國衛生及公共服務部部長亞阿薩爾8月9日訪台，因應國際間持續蔓延的新冠肺炎疫情率代表團代表美國總統川普抵台，探討進一步的醫療及公衛合作。阿薩爾是台美自1979年斷交以來拜訪台灣的最高層級美國官員。

In a meeting with the delegation, President Tsai Ing-wen said the visit was a remarkable progress as Taiwan and America join hands in fighting the pandemic.

The president said that Taiwan has shown that it is possible to prevent a major coronavirus outbreak in the country and assist other countries in battling against the disease at the same time. She added that it is a shame that China still insists on excluding Taiwan from the World Health Assembly, stressing that “politics should never override human rights.”
蔡英文也說台灣已經證明不僅可以守住國內疫情，也能夠支援其他國家防疫。蔡英文提到，非常遺憾中國仍堅持拒台灣於世界衛生大會之門外。她強調：「政治永遠不應該凌駕人權之上。」

On this, the president thanked US officials for recognizing Taiwan’s contribution to global health and helping to enhance the country’s global presence. “I believe that the two sides will continue making major breakthroughs in pandemic prevention and other areas, which will ultimately benefit the Indo-Pacific region,” Tsai said optimistically.
蔡英文也就此感謝美國官員對台灣協助國際防疫的認可，以及協助增加台灣在國際間的能見度。蔡英文樂觀地說：「我相信在雙方合作在防疫與各個領域交流有更多突破，為印太地區貢獻更多力量。」

Responding to Tsai’s words, Azar said, “It is a true honor to be here to convey a message of strong support and friendship from President Trump to Taiwan.” He said that Taiwan’s transparency and democracy have played an essential role in containing the virus and hence the focus of the trip was to exchange experiences and deepen mutual collaboration.

Azar later witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on health cooperation by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO).
