The US Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2020 on Tuesday, which requires the Pentagon to report Chinese efforts to interfere in Taiwan’s elections.

After the House of Representatives approved the bill with a 377-48 margin on Wednesday last week, the Senate passed the legislation with an 86-8 vote on Tuesday.

The bill will require the US Director of National Intelligence to submit a report on “influence operations conducted by China” targeting Taiwan’s elections, as well as any actions by the US to “disrupt those operations,” within 45 days of Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections on January 11.

The NDAA also requires the US Department of Defense to assess the feasibility of establishing “a high-level and interagency US-Taiwan working group for coordinating responses to emerging issues related to cybersecurity” within 180 days of the act’s implementation.

Finally, the legislation states that based on the Taiwan Relations Act, the US should continue to strengthen defense and security ties with Taiwan in areas including arms sales, exchange programs for military personnel, and the transit of US vessels through the Taiwan Strait.
