US President Joe Biden ordered intelligence agencies to “redouble their efforts” to investigate the origins of the coronavirus amid renewed questions about whether it spread from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

In a statement, Biden said the intelligence community delivered a report to him that showed it was split over the origins of the pandemic. The report on whether the virus came from human contact with an infected animal or from a lab accident in China was inconclusive.

Biden revealed that two agencies lean toward animals being the source and one leans more toward the lab theory, adding, “each with low or moderate confidence.”

Biden asked intelligence agencies to report to him in 90 days. He directed national laboratories to assist with the investigation and called on China to cooperate with international probes into the origins of the virus.

Andy Slavitt, Biden’s senior adviser for the coronavirus, said that the world needs to “get to the bottom ... whatever the answer may be.”
