On October 17, after 10 years of negotiations, the US Department of Agriculture granted Taiwan permission to export guavas to the US, according to Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture (COA).
農委會於17日表示，在叩關十年之後，美國農業部終於准許台灣芭樂進口。

According to Quarantine Office Deputy Director-General Chou Hui-chuan, the US had concerned about pest risks from guavas in Taiwan, which is known to be home to several fruit fly species.

To go through American customs, Taiwanese guava imports must meet several conditions.

First, they should be stored below one degree Celsius for 17 straight days before entering the US.
首先，入美之前，芭樂必須先存放在零下溫度中整整17天。

Second, to keep out pests, guavas should be covered in two bags after they have flowered on the tree.

With these procedures in place, the first batch of fresh guavas will hopefully hit the US market by the end of this year.
