Uncollected Funds
Kate and Carl are friends. Kate is talking to Carl regarding a check issue.
Kate: Carl, I cashed a check yesterday, but my account doesn’t reflect the amount. I wonder if the issuer has an insufficient account balance.
reflect(v.)反射、反映、映出、顯示issuer(n.)發票人=payer=drawersufficient(adj.)
Carl: It’s probably because their bank hasn’t paid the fund. It takes more than one day for a check to be deposited if it is done through different banks. During the process, the check will show up as uncollected funds before it clears.
deposit(n.)(v.)
Kate: Sorry, you’ve lost me when you mentioned the process.
Carl: Basically, uncollected funds are just a way for a bank to tell you that you have received a check, but the funds are not yet available to use.
Kate: Oh I see. Why do banks do that anyway?
Carl: As for banks, it’s an effective way to manage accounts payable and accounts receivable. Uncollected funds are sums of money that the bank needs to reconcile before releasing the funds to the check recipient.
accounts payable and accounts receivable 應付帳款與應收帳款reconcile(v.)
Kate: What could happen without this process?
Carl: Without it, an issuer could write a bad check payable to themselves, cash it at a different bank and get paid in cash, leaving the bank to absorb the loss. Uncollected funds protect banks from the losses associated with fraudulent check payments.
absorb(v.)吸收、承擔(成本、費用)be associated with 與~有關fraudulent(adj.)詐騙相關的fraud(n.)詐騙fraudster(n.)
Kate: But doesn’t that mean the payee cannot access the uncollected funds until the check clears?
payee(n.)受款人=recipient=draweeaccess(n.)(v.)
Carl: I’m afraid that is the issue. Since check clearing times vary between banks, several business days may pass before the payee gets access to the funds.
