In a joint letter backed by the British Retail Consortium, the chief executives of major supermarket chains warned that crashing out of the European Union will result in “significant” disruptions to their supply chains.

The letter was co-signed by the chief executives of major supermarket chains, including Sainsbury, Asda, Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and the Co-op, as well as fast food giants McDonald’s and KFC.

“We anticipate significant risks to maintaining the choice, quality and durability of food that our customers have come to expect in our stores, and there will be inevitable pressure on food prices from higher transport costs, currency devaluation and tariffs,” said the letter.
