Ride-hailing firm Uber has been forced to pay US$148 million (NT$4.5 billion) in fines, after it attempted to cover up a cyberattack that exposed the personal data of over 50 million customers and drivers.

The breach occurred in 2016, but instead of reporting the stolen data as required by law, Uber paid the hackers a ransom of US$100,000 to destroy the information.
