Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC) has announced construction of a $12 billion plant in Phoenix, Arizona.
President Joe Biden appeared there on December 6 as part of a “tool-in” ceremony to promote the government’s dedication to boosting semiconductor manufacturing in the US.

This move by TSMC comes after Biden signed the “CHIPS and Science” law in August, which gives $52.7 billion for subsidizing US semiconductor manufacturing and research, along with $24 billion in tax credits for chip plants, to help prevent shortages in the supply chain from happening again.

The US and Europe have been encouraging Taiwanese semiconductor firms to move operations outside of Taiwan due to the recent military pressure from China.
In addition, with TSMC planning to open a factory in Japan, some critics have expressed concern that the semiconductor industry may be saying “goodbye to Taiwan.”

However, Wang has addressed these fears by saying that despite the expansion of production into other countries, most chips will still be made in Taiwan.
