
張忠謀退休 台積電採「雙首長制」
Morris Chang, founder and chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), announced on Monday that he will retire in June 2018, after having built the company into the world’s largest contract chipmaker with a market capitalization of around $180 billion.
將公司打造成市值破1800億、世界最大的晶圓代工廠後,台積電的創辦人和董事長張忠謀週一宣佈將於2018年6月退休。

Starting from next June, Chang will be succeeded as chairman by Mark Liu, who has been co-CEO along with C.C. Wei since 2013. Wei will become the sole CEO.

TSMC will be under the dual leadership of Liu and Wei. Liu will be the final gatekeeper for decision-making and serve as TSMC’s most senior representative to local government and society, whereas Wei will report to the board as a whole, including the new chairman.

Chang said in a statement that he will not be a director in the next term of the board of directors. Nor will he participate in any TSMC management activities after the annual shareholders meeting in early June next year.

The change in leadership comes at a critical time as TSMC, which has thrived on flourishing demand for chips used in smartphones, now seeks to tap into emerging industries such as artificial intelligence and autonomous driving.

Analysts generally believe that the management reshuffle is unlikely to affect TSMC in the short run.

“We believe in five years, TSMC could still lead the market,” said Rick Hsu, an analyst at Daiwa Capital Markets.

“We don’t think Morris Chang’s retirement will have a very big impact for the short term, as the two executives have already co-worked for several years, and we do expect the transition to be smooth,” he added.
他補充道:「我們不認為張忠謀的退休短期內會造成很大的衝擊,因為兩位執行長已共事數年,預期交接將會非常順利。」
