Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has filed multiple lawsuits against the US semiconductor fabricator GlobalFoundries for patent infringement.

These lawsuits are a direct response to a similar litigation process launched earlier by GlobalFoundries against TSMC.

In lawsuits filed in the US, Germany and Singapore, TSMC has asserted that GlobalFoundries has violated 25 of its patents pertaining to the 40 nanometer (nm), 28nm, 22nm, 14nm, and 12nm node processes.

Given the broad nature of the claims, should TSMC emerge victorious in its lawsuits, the US company’s production lines would be severely impacted.

The move follows a barrage of patent infringement complaints that GlobalFoundries filed against TSMC, claiming that the Taiwanese company has illegally used 16 of its patents.

In response, TSMC said “GlobalFoundries’ complaints are without merit and reflect an attempt to disrupt TSMC’s business through litigation rather than trying to compete on technological merit.”

TSMC general counsel Sylvia Fang said in a statement that the “lawsuits seek to safeguard our reputation, our significant investments, our nearly 500 customers, and consumers around the world to ensure that everyone benefits from the most advanced semiconductor technologies that enable a wide range of applications, such as mobile, 5G, AI (artificial intelligence), IoT (the Internet of Things) and high-performance computing, which are valuable to the public interest.”
