Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, along with Vice President Lai Ching-te, attended a reception in Taipei on February 26 to mark the birthday of Japanese Emperor Naruhito.

Speaking at the event, Tsai commented on the close economic ties and shared values of the two countries, likening the relationship between Taiwan and Japan to “that of family members.”

In her remarks, Tsai noted that trade between Taiwan and Japan reached NT$2.39 trillion in 2023.

She also said that industries in both countries stand to benefit from ongoing Taiwan-Japan cooperation, especially as the global supply chain is changing.

According to NHK News, this year’s reception was the first time since 1972 — when Japan ended formal ties with Taiwan — that Taiwan’s top two leaders joined the emperor’s birthday celebration in Taipei.
