Trump’s ‘Reciprocal Tariffs’ Explained
In early April, U.S. President Donald Trump announced what he called “reciprocal tariffs” on imports from most countries.

According to the BBC, the goal of these import taxes is to strengthen the U.S. economy by encouraging consumers to buy American-made products.

The tariffs were introduced in two stages.

The first stage, which began on April 5, involved tariffs of at least 10% on nearly all imports to the U.S.
nearly(adv.)幾乎=almost=virtually=practically
On April 9, a second set of tariffs was imposed on 60 countries, with some reaching as high as 104%.

Although Trump referred to these tariffs as “reciprocal,” they are not directly based on the amount other countries charge the U.S. in tariffs and fees.

refer to A as B 把A稱為Bbe based on根據charge(v.)
In fact, the tariffs were set at levels intended to reduce the U.S. trade deficit in goods with each country.

despite(prep.)儘管=in spite ofbe subject to遭受~、承受~
According to the BBC, American importers will be responsible for paying the taxes to the government, based on the value and country of origin of each product.

However, it is likely that most — if not all — of these additional costs will be passed on to consumers.

As a result, prices for products such as coffee, alcohol, and electronics could rise sharply in the U.S. due to limited supply and the added fees from the tariffs.
