The Japanese automaker announced on Tuesday that it will collaborate with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to develop a manned, pressurized rover for a 2029 moon landing.

The moon rover will use Toyota’s fuel cell vehicle (FCV) technologies.

“It is exposed to radiation and temperature conditions that are much harsher than those on Earth, as well as an ultra-high vacuum environment,” said Koichi Wakata, JAXA Vice President. “For a wide-ranging human exploration of the moon, a pressurized rover that can travel more than 10,000 km in such an environment is a necessity.”

The proposed rover would be “about the size of two microbuses” or a 6-meter by 5.3-meter vehicle standing 3.8 meters tall.

Toyota Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi said the company’s collaboration with JAXA is part of its efforts to promote electrified vehicles. “Contributing to Earth’s environment cannot be achieved without the widespread use of electrified vehicles,” said Terashi. “We are proud to be a member of ‘Team Japan’ and to take up the challenge of space.”
