Toyota Announces Plan to Get Wheels on the Moon
Toyota is joining hands with Japan’s space agency on a lunar project.
joining hands with sb. 與…攜手合作=collaborate with~=work hand in hand with~lunar(adj.)
The Japanese automaker announced on Tuesday that it will collaborate with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to develop a manned, pressurized rover for a 2029 moon landing.
manned(adj.)有人駕駛的unmanned(adj.)無人駕駛的pressurized(adj.)加壓的rover(n.)探測車
The moon rover will use Toyota’s fuel cell vehicle (FCV) technologies.
Instead of a battery, a FCV uses a fuel cell comprised of oxygen and compressed hydrogen, which react with each other to generate electricity.
instead of~而不是=rather thanbe comprised of~由…組成=be made up of=be composed of~
The fuel cell emits only water, which in turn reduces the amount of harmful waste products left behind.
emit(v.)排放;散發=give off=releasein turn因此=as a result
Because of its high energy density, it can provide a lot of energy, which makes it especially ideal for the project.
density(n.)密度
The pressurized rover would have a cruising range of more than 10,000 km on the surface of the moon, although the amounts of fuel that can be taken there would be limited.
cruise(v.)搭船旅行、(船隻、飛機)巡航although(conj.)雖然;儘管=despite the fact that…
“It is exposed to radiation and temperature conditions that are much harsher than those on Earth, as well as an ultra-high vacuum environment,” said Koichi Wakata, JAXA Vice President. “For a wide-ranging human exploration of the moon, a pressurized rover that can travel more than 10,000 km in such an environment is a necessity.”
be exposed to~暴露於..周下harsh(adj.)嚴苛的=toughwide-ranging(adj.)範圍廣的explore(v.)探索exploration(n.)
The proposed rover would be “about the size of two microbuses” or a 6-meter by 5.3-meter vehicle standing 3.8 meters tall.
There would be enough room for two people or four in an emergency.
emergency(n.)
Toyota Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi said the company’s collaboration with JAXA is part of its efforts to promote electrified vehicles. “Contributing to Earth’s environment cannot be achieved without the widespread use of electrified vehicles,” said Terashi. “We are proud to be a member of ‘Team Japan’ and to take up the challenge of space.”
collaboration(n.)合作=cooperationcollaborate(v.)合作=cooperateelectrify(v.)
