With lively night markets, towering skyscrapers and a population of 8 million people, you might think that there’s hardly any space at all in Taipei. You might be wrong, though.

Statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) have revealed that Taiwan is sitting on over 13,000 square hectares of uninherited land, an area larger than Keelung municipality.

Ceng Jingde, a project manager for Sinyi Realty Inc, says the problem could stem from a number of factors. These include “disagreements between inheritors”, “problems with property rights and low property values” and “being unfamiliar with the law”.
