The legislation, approved on March 27th, will take effect in 2021. The 10 types of products affected include plates, balloon sticks, food and beverage containers, cutlery, straws, and stirrers, CNN reports.

According to EU News, EU’s First Vice-President Frans Timmermans said: “Today, we have taken an important step in order to reduce littering and plastic pollution in our oceans and seas. Europe is setting new and ambitious standards, paving the way for the rest of the world.”

Vice-President Jyrki Katainen also added that the new rules will not only prevent plastic pollution, but will also make the European Union a world leader in implementing more sustainable policies on the use of plastic.
