The Causes and Effects of Wildfires
Wildfires are a type of natural disaster in which fires that are not planned and not able to be controlled spread through natural areas.
自然的nature(n.)自然disaster(n.)災害disastrous(adj.)災害的、災難性的、悲慘的be able to可以uncontrolled, uncontrollable(adj.)不被控制的spread(v.)伸展、散布、傳播through(prep.)遍及
These unpredictable fires are not only dangerous to humans, animals, wild plants and crops but also to the Earth’s climate.
unpredictable(adj.)無法預測的predict(v.) He predicted that an earthquake was imminent.他預言即將發生地震prediction(n.)預言predictable(adj.)
For wildfires to start, there need to be three things: heat, oxygen and fuel.
heat(n.)熱能、高溫fuel(n.)
In some cases, the causes of a fire are completely natural, like lightning striking, a volcano erupting or falling rocks creating sparks.
ignite(v.)點燃、使燃燒erupt(v.)(火山等的)爆發eruption(n.)爆發spark(n.) He showed not a spark of interest in the plan.他對這個計畫一點不感興趣spark(v.)
However, humans can also start wildfires accidentally with sparks from equipment, power lines, campfires, fireworks or cigarettes or intentionally by lighting fires to burn old crops or simply to destroy things.
by accident意外地intentionally(adv.)故意地、蓄意地=purposely, deliberately, on purposeintention(n.)意圖
Once started, these fires can spread quickly by burning fuel, which can be dry or dead plants.
once(conj.)一旦
Windy and hot weather can also aid in spreading wildfires.
aid(v.)幫助=help, assist
Because of this, drier conditions and higher temperatures caused by climate change in some areas have increased the danger of fires.
consequently(adv.)因此
As for the effects, wildfires can kill animals, plants and people, destroy homes and businesses and create higher levels of air pollution.
as for至於regarding(prep.)關於effect(n.)影響
In fact, the amount of greenhouse gases produced by wildfires can also contribute to climate change.
in fact事實上=as a matter of factcontribute to貢獻、促成、導致result in導致
This not only makes such fires a huge problem for adding to global warming but also increases the risk of similar disasters.
risk(n.)風險risky(adj.)
