Taiwan is an extremely mountainous island, containing 286 peaks that stand taller than 3,000m.

In an effort to encourage the hiking of these taller mountains, in 1968, the Taiwan Province Alpine Association chose 100 of the country’s top hiking mountains based on their “height, danger, beauty, and uniqueness,” calling them the “100 Peaks,” or “baiyue” in Chinese.
