S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on November 16 that the electric carmaker will be added to the benchmark index prior to trading on December 21 to coincide with the December quarterly rebalance.

To be eligible for inclusion in the S&P 500, a company must have at least an $8.2 billion market value, be highly liquid — meaning that stockholders can easily sell when they choose to — and have at least 50% of its shares available to the public. Its most recent quarter’s earnings and the sum of its trailing four consecutive quarters’ earnings must be positive as well.

Being included in the index typically sets off a scramble among investors to buy the shares of the newly added company, as many investment funds track the index. Tesla’s move to the index could spark as much as $8 billion inflows from mutual funds, according to Goldman Sachs.

The news of S&P 500 inclusion “will of course likely drive a rally in the stock,” JMP Securities analyst Joseph Osha wrote in a note to clients. “We think there is still upside,” he said, adding that Tesla should be valued like Apple, instead of being compared with other car companies.

Shares of Tesla soared 8.2% the next day after the company’s inclusion in the index was announced. The company’s CEO Elon Musk saw his fortune swell to $109.7 billion on that day, given his 20% stake in Tesla. He has overtaken Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to become the third-richest person in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
