U.S. President Donald Trump recently renewed his threats to impose tariffs on Taiwan-made semiconductors.

While the Taiwanese government has been working to reach an agreement with Trump to prevent this, former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has said that this approach is not an answer to America’s dependence on Taiwanese chips.

In a Feb. 13 interview with CNA News, Bolton stated there is a need for concern over how the tension between Beijing and Taipei could impact the semiconductor industry.

However, he noted that the simple solution of imposing tariffs “shows a lack of understanding of the current global situation” and would likely harm both American businesses and consumers.

According to Bolton, the whole world — including the U.S. — is “dependent on the chips that are manufactured in Taiwan.”
manufacture(v.)(大量)生產;製造=mass-producemanufacturer(n.)製造商
Consequently, Bolton believes that tariffs would immediately make U.S.-made products using Taiwan-made chips more expensive.
consequently(adv.)因此=therefore=as a result
He noted that this would ultimately lead to American companies selling fewer products and experiencing a decline in profits.

Because of the number of U.S. companies that could be affected, Bolton said a large group of Americans would likely try to persuade Congress not to impose tariffs on Taiwanese chips.
persuade(v.)說服
During the interview, Bolton also refuted Trump’s major claim that Taiwan “stole” America’s semiconductor industry.
refute(v.)駁斥irrefutable(adj.)
In addition to calling it “absolutely not true,” he said the shift of chip production away from the U.S. was the direct result of an ongoing “lack of attention” to semiconductor manufacturing in America rather than any specific actions by Taiwanese companies.
