Taiwan’s first directly elected president Lee Teng-hui passed away on July 30 at the age of 97.
台灣第一任直接民選總統李登輝於7月30日去世,享壽97歲。

Lee’s political career began when he returned from the US with a PhD in agricultural economics and started to work in the Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction.

In 1972, the then-premier Chiang Ching-kuo recruited him as cabinet minister without portfolio responsible for agriculture. Lee was later appointed as the mayor of Taipei City in 1978 and served for three years. In 1984, Chiang nominated Lee to become his vice president, and in 1988 Lee succeeded Chiang as president when he died. The 1990s were Lee’s golden years.
1972年,時任行政院院長的蔣經國延攬李登輝以農經專長擔任行政院政務委員。李登輝隨後於1978年任官派台北市市長,任職3年。1984年,蔣經國提名李登輝為副總統,後來1988年蔣經國去世,由李登輝接任總統,為其90年代的政治黃金生涯揭開序幕。
