Taiwan’s economic fundamentals remained strong at the end of the last quarter, with an index reflecting the country’s economic situation flashing a “red light” for three months in a row, according to the National Development Council.
國家發展委員會指出，台灣經濟基本面在上個季度末依然強勁，反映國內經濟情勢的指數連續三個月亮起紅燈。

Data released by the NDC showed that the composite index of monitoring indicators, which evaluate the economic climate, went up one point from the previous month to 41 in April, the highest figure over the past 34 years.

The NDC uses a five-color system to denote the country’s economic performance, with blue meaning contraction, yellow-blue standing for sluggishness, green representing stable growth, yellow-red signifying a warming economy, and red pointing to a booming economy.

Meanwhile, the leading economic indicators, which forecast economic activity in the following three to six months, fell by 0.02% from a month earlier to 104.72, the NDC stated.

The decline is mainly due to a reduction in the total floor area of new construction projects, one of the seven factors that constitute the leading indicators.
