Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance reported on January 11 that 2023’s total tax revenue reached NT$3.4319 trillion.

This total amount was not only an all-time high, but due to its 5.7% year-over-year increase, it also exceeded “the budgeted amount by NT$361.7 billion.”

Some of the biggest increases were reported in personal income tax revenue, which rose 14.4% over the previous year’s total to NT$749.7 billion, and stock transaction tax revenue, which increased 12.4% year over year to a total of NT$197.3 billion.
其中增幅最大的是個人所得稅收入，較上年度增長14.4%，達到7,497億元新台幣；證交稅收入同比增長12.4%，達到1,973億元新台幣。

Liang Kuan-hsuan, a senior specialist in the MOF’s Department of Statistics, has noted that this latter amount is the “second-highest total ever” and was likely boosted by the growing interest in AI-related stocks increasing the level of activity on the Taiwanese stock market.

According to Liang, this “increase was driven mainly by businesses settling tax bills from higher-than-expected profits made in 2022.”
