老車未檢難上路
The government has approved changes to Taiwan’s air pollution laws, that will be tougher on old cars, scooters, trucks and factories, affecting more than 5 million vehicles across the country.

From 2020, cars over 10 years old will have to pass strict emissions tests to be allowed on the road.
自2020年起，10年以上的老車將需要通過嚴格的排放檢驗才能上路。

If a driver fails the test or does not have his vehicle inspected then his license plate will be taken away.

All car and scooter drivers will also have to pass a new emissions test that could be punished with a fine of up to NT$30,000 if they fail to make improvements.

Officials will also set up “air quality control districts” where people will not be allowed to drive older vehicles.

However, some argue that the law is not enough. Critics say that the government is still relying on coal as island’s main source of energy as it plans to close Taiwan’s remaining nuclear power plants.
