Lily just watched a video on social media talking about the different way people speak Mandarin in Taiwan and China.

Lily: Not really. It’s about how Chinese is spoken differently in Taiwan and China. Some people in China pronounce the “W” sound like a “V.” So, “Wen” (to ask) becomes “Ven.”
莉莉：不算啦。這是關於台灣和中國在中文發音上的不同。有些中國人會把「W」的音唸成「V」，所以「問」就變成了「Ven」。

Kevin: Oh! So instead of saying “Wen,” they say “Ven”? That sounds strange to me.

Lily: Yeah! A Taiwanese girl posted about it. She heard someone in a shop say, “I’ll Ven you one more time.” Now everyone is talking about the different accents.
莉莉：對啊！有個台灣女生發文說這件事。她在店裡聽到有人說：「我再Ven一次」。現在大家都在討論不同的腔調。

Lily: Some Chinese internet users are very upset. They feel offended when we talk about their accent.
莉莉：有些中國網友很不高興。當我們討論到他們的腔調時，他們覺得有受到冒犯。

Kevin: That’s interesting. Are there other differences?

Lily: Many! In Taiwan, we say “Le-Se” for trash, but they say “La-ji”. It’s the same language, but different sounds!
莉莉：很多喔！在台灣我們說「ㄌㄜˋㄙㄜˋ」，但他們說「ㄌㄚˉㄐㄧˉ」。同樣的語言，讀音卻不同！
