On January 4, Taiwan shares closed at a record high, breaching 18,500 points as the electronics sector led the upturn on the back of a tech-fueled rally on the US markets.

Buying on the local main board sped up as a 1.2% rally on the tech-heavy Nasdaq index spurred investors to buy into large-cap electronics stocks, namely TSMC and Largan, bringing about the record high closing level of the Taiex.

“Due to its heavy weighting, TSMC’s gains basically served as an anchor for the broader market,” Concord Securities analyst Kerry Huang said, referring to TSMC’s contribution of about 210 points to the Taiex’s rise.

However, Huang said, “As foreign institutional investors returned to the trading floor after the New Year holiday, they started rebuilding their portfolio by buying into TSMC.”

TSMC’s buying also spread to other semiconductor stocks, which saw integrated circuit designer MediaTek Inc. rising 1.3%, closing at NT$1,165, and IC packaging and testing services provider ASE Technology Holding Co. increasing by 1.42% to end at NT$107.
