Automakers around the globe are facing a shortage of semiconductor chips as they struggle to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said that it has received requests from the governments of Germany and Japan to persuade Taiwanese manufacturers to ramp up production to help alleviate a shortage of semiconductor chips in the auto industry.

According to a Reuters report, Japan’s auto manufacturers’ association and TSMC were already in touch, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has also reached out to Japan’s de facto embassy in Taipei to ask for their support in those talks.

In response, the MOEA said that the minister has spoken to TSMC’s senior executive about the issue. TSMC said that although its current production capacity is full, it will prioritize auto chip production if it is able to further increase capacity.
