Taiwan has reached a milestone of being rated as a “free” country for the 25th consecutive year by US-based NGO Freedom House.

The organization released its Freedom in the World 2023 report on March 9, marking the 50th year of ratings, which gave Taiwan a Global Freedom Score of 94 of 100.

In order to calculate the score for the 195 countries and 15 territories on this year’s list, researchers, analysts, advisers and Freedom House’s own staff looked at many aspects of each locations’ “political rights” and “civil liberties.”

This near-perfect score in political rights was due to the country’s “strong performances in the subcategories of electoral process, political pluralism and participation, and functioning of government.”

According to the Freedom in the World 2023 report, the top five nations include three that received perfect scores — Finland, Norway and Sweden — along with New Zealand and Canada, which scored 99 and 98 respectively.

Overall, Freedom House evaluated 7.9 billion people of the world’s population, rating 20% of them as “free,” while 41% were “‘partly free’ and the remainder were ‘not free.’”
