In a bid to stimulate population growth, Taiwan will expand child-support programs by providing a monthly allowance of NT$2,500 for households with a toddler up to age 4 starting from August 2019.

Speaking to the press, Premier Lai said that the financial burden of raising a child was slowing the nation’s already low birth rate, adding that the government needed to be investing more in childcare.

This includes a new monthly allowance that will be available to parents who pay 20% or less in income tax, are not on unpaid leave, and have not enrolled their child in a government-subsidized facility.

The benefit for each child will range from NT$2,500 to NT$5,000 per month, depending on family income level, while a family with more than two children will receive NT$1,000 per month for each additional child.

Currently, the benefit is restricted to families with children under the age of two, while parents must pay 20 percent or less in income tax and one of them must be unemployed.
