The world’s reserve currency surged last week, with the dollar gauge rising to a three-year high amid a global scramble for cash in anticipation of a prolonged coronavirus pandemic.

Fears of a global credit crunch were exacerbated by the dollar’s rise, which in turn contributed to broad-based selling of stocks and other assets, with even traditional safe haven assets such as gold and U.S. Treasuries under pressure. That, in turn, added to the demand for dollars, creating a vicious circle.
