Study: Men Are More likely to Troll People Online than Women
A new study found that men are more likely to be internet trolls than women because they show higher levels of narcissism.
narcissism(n.)自戀
The study, published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, surveyed 573 Facebook users online and asked them to rate themselves on a 13-point narcissistic personality sale as well as statements about their motives for using Facebook.
narcissistic(adj.)自戀的motive(n.)
Examples of antisocial behavior included statements such as “how far would you agree that you use the platform antisocially, to ‘show off,’ ‘be mean,’ or ‘badmouth’ people.”
antisocially(adv.)反社會地antisocial(adj.)反社會的badmouth(v.)說壞話=speak ill of~
Statements demonstrating prosocial behavior included “I use Facebook ‘like’ and ‘comment’ functions to show support for others” and “I use Facebook to communicate with people I do not often see”.
demonstrate(v.)
Researchers from Brunel University and Goldsmith, University of London have found that overall, men are more motivated to use Facebook antisocially, and women were more likely to use it prosocially, to feel more connected to people and have more of a sense of belonging.
be motivated to RV有…動機prosocially(adv.)
This could be explained at least in part by the fact that narcissism is a lot more common in men than women.
As for why narcissism leads to trolling, Goldsmiths co-author Dr. Nelli Ferenczi explains that “people with narcissistic tendencies may behave in hostile ways as a response to comments they perceive are negative.”
as for~至於tendency(n.)傾向=inclination
“They may also behave in hostile ways because they are prone to aggression and manipulative behavior.”
be prone to~有…負面傾向aggression(n.)攻擊;挑釁manipulative(adj.)
The researchers also point out that societal gender roles have a role to play with regard to sex differences in Facebook use.
gender roles性別角色with regard to~和…有關=about~
“In terms of greater narcissism, one explanation may be that as a result of stereotypes, characteristics such as competitiveness, assertiveness, need for achievement and dominance, tend to be encouraged in the socialization of men and punished in women,” the authors wrote.
competitiveness(n.)競爭力assertiveness(n.)自信、魄力socialization(n.)
