It was an act inconceivable in Thailand mere months ago — an estimated 10,000 mainly youthful protestors packed Bangkok’s iconic Democracy Monument, demanding the government to resign, to dissolve the parliament and to hold new elections under a revised constitution, with some even calling for reform of the country’s monarchy.

Over the past month, there have been almost daily student-led protests across the country that have since drawn both young and old citizens to join.

The protesters were calling for Prayuth and his military government to step down. Prayuth is accused of holding onto power unfairly by rigging a 2019 election to guarantee his victory.

In February, the first rounds of student protests were mobilized after the pro-democracy Future Forward Party was dissolved by court order. The protests were quickly subdued by Covid-19 restrictions before erupting again in mid-July.

It’s not just university students; high school students are also airing their discontent with the ruling establishment. Pupils in at least eight Thai high schools raised three-finger “Hunger Games” salutes when the national anthem was being played during morning assemblies to voice solidarity with the protestors, who were mainly college students.

Analysts say that it remains to be seen how far Thailand’s students will be allowed to test taboo boundaries before Prayuth’s military-backed government pushes back with force, which could ultimately serve to draw more support for the movement.
